Demi Lovato is Indexbitsetting some rules when it comes to her future kids’ experiences in La La Land.
While sharing insight into her own experience with child stardom, the 31-year-old admitted she plans to set some boundaries for any of her future kids wanting to follow in her footsteps.
“I’d say, ‘Let’s study music theory and prepare you for the day you turn 18, because it’s not happening before that,” Demi told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Aug. 14. “‘Not because I don’t believe in you or love you or want you to be happy, but because I want you to have a childhood, the childhood that I didn’t have.’”
In addition to protecting their childhood, the “Heart Attack” singer doesn’t want her future children to have a narrow view on their career options.
“‘And also, let’s come up with a backup plan,’ which is something I wish I’d done,” she continued. “Sometimes I think it’s time for me to move on, but I’m in this weird position in my career because I still rely on music for my income.”
Demi’s advice comes to light after growing up as a child actor and singer on Disney Channel, a topic she discusses in detail in the upcoming documentary Child Star. In the doc—for which she is a co-director—the “Neon Lights” singer interviews other stars who rose to fame as kids, including Drew Barrymore, Raven-Symoné, Christina Ricci, Alyson Stoner, JoJo Siwa and Kenan Thompson.
In addition to thinking about parenthood while looking back at her own upbringing, her plans to start a family is something Demi, who has been engaged to singer-songwriter Jordan “Jutes” Lutes since December 2023, has been candid about.
“My bucket list doesn’t include things like jumping out of a plane ’cause I’ve already done that,” she told Entertainment Tonight in August 2022. “Things like having a family is really important to me. It’s the substance of life.”
In the meantime, Demi and Jutes have added a four-legged member to their family. The singer announced on July 23 that they had recently welcomed their new “son,” their dog Pickle. And the couple is loving their growing household. Demi uploaded a gallery of adorable Pickle pictures to Instagram on July 28, with Jutes, 33, commenting alongside heart-eyed emojis, “My family.”
